Backstory

Brom Cinderhelm has braided red hair and green eyes, he is not a dwarf who thinks before he swings — and he has the scars to prove it. Born in the deep-mountain hold of Karveth's Vein, he was raised in a clan of miners and forge-workers who measured worth in calluses and output. Brom had plenty of both, but where his kin found satisfaction in the slow, patient craft of stonework and metal, he found only restlessness. He was always the first to volunteer when a tunnel collapse needed clearing by hand, the first to wade into a cave-rat infestation with nothing but a pick. When a rival clan triggered a rockfall that sealed three of Karveth's Vein's lower shafts — and buried a dozen of Brom's kinsmen — he didn't wait for the clan elders to deliberate. He strapped on the great axe his grandfather had left him, walked out of the hold, and started breaking things until the rival clan's gate was a pile of splinters. The elders were furious. Brom was exiled before the week was out. For the years since, Brom has carved out a living as a dungeon-runner, and it suits him with an honesty that surprises even himself. The portals don't require patience or politics — they require grit, aggression, and the willingness to keep moving forward when everything in the dark is trying to stop you. He's developed a rough reputation across the market towns of Valdenmere: dependable in a fight, disastrous at a negotiating table, and constitutionally incapable of leaving a dungeon once he's entered it without reaching whatever is deepest inside. He's been dragged out unconscious twice. He went back in both times. What drives Brom isn't glory, exactly, and it isn't coin — though he spends plenty of both at tavern bars, retelling battles with expansive arm gestures that have knocked over more than one drink. It's something he couldn't name if pressed, something close to the feeling he had watching that rival clan's gate come apart under his axe: the deep, animal satisfaction of a problem solved completely. The portals are full of problems. Brom is very good at solving them. One day, he suspects, he'll find a dungeon that finally matches him. He's looking forward to it.
