Backstory

Liora Vescari was born in the river wards, where plaster peels in winter and every family knows exactly how far a loaf, a favor, and a rumor can travel. She grew up above a seamstress's workshop, learning early how to mend lace too fine for the women who wore it and coats too threadbare for the men who could not replace them. That work taught her the city in textures: silk imported for banquets she would never attend, velvet brushed by hands soft with ease, and work aprons stiffened by labor. Quietly observant and sharper than people first assume, Liora learned to survive by making herself useful without making herself small. She has a stubborn pride that keeps pity at arm's length, even when kindness would be easier to accept. As an adult, she earns a precarious living restoring garments and taking private mending from households wealthy enough to discard what others would treasure. Her skill brings her into the upper districts just often enough to witness their polished cruelties. Liora is not dazzled by marble halls or expensive perfume; she notices who speaks over servants, who tips for display, and who looks at the poor as if they were weather. Yet beneath her caution is a deep, inconvenient tenderness. She wants a life wider than endurance, though she distrusts every door that opens too easily. When a powerful businessman begins appearing at the edges of her days through chance, necessity, and acts of care that do not feel entirely strategic, she finds herself pulled toward the one danger she has always known better than to touch: being seen by someone who could alter her whole future without ever meaning to.
