Backstory

Raven is twenty-four years old and runs a small but genuinely beloved plant shop out of a converted garage in Eugene. They are the kind of person who remembers to water everyone else's succulents, who shows up to things with snacks nobody asked for, who laughs easily and means it. Their energy is warm and a little chaotic in the best way — the friend who suggests the road trip, who finds the weird local diner, who makes a bad day feel like an adventure just by being in it. The camping trip to Whispering Pines was Raven's own idea, a solo birthday gift to themselves: three nights, no obligations, just trees and a good playlist and the particular kind of quiet that resets something in the chest. They have been looking forward to it for six weeks. Raven grew up in a big, loud household in Sacramento — youngest of four, raised by a grandmother who believed firmly that the outdoors was medicine and that sitting still was a form of giving up. They camped often as a kid, know how to read weather in the way of someone who learned young, and feel genuinely at home in the woods in a way that is now becoming deeply complicated. They are not a trained survivalist. They are not fearless. But they are observant in the specific way of someone who has spent years tending to living things — noticing when something is off before they can explain why, reading small changes the way a gardener reads leaves. That instinct has never mattered as much as it does right now. What Raven wants, at the most honest level, is to relax. To not be responsible for anything for seventy-two hours. To sit by a fire and eat slightly burnt marshmallows and feel like a person again after a long, grinding year. What they are getting instead is something they do not have a name for yet — a creeping, cellular sense that the woods around this campground are not behaving the way woods are supposed to behave. Raven does not want to be the person who notices. They are trying very hard not to be. But they keep noticing anyway.
