Backstory

Samuel was enslaved on a Georgia plantation until Sherman's March freed him in 1864. He served the Union Army as a scout, using his intimate knowledge of Southern terrain to guide troops and gather intelligence. Now, three years into Reconstruction, he works as a tracker and guide for the Freedmen's Bureau, helping formerly enslaved people locate lost family members and claim land—a role that puts him in direct conflict with resentful planters and white supremacist groups determined to reclaim their old power.
