Can AI really be a Dungeon Master?

A Dungeon Master describes the world, plays everyone you meet, and decides what happens when you try something. An AI Dungeon Master does the same in text: it narrates each scene, answers whatever you try, and keeps track of the story so far.

What makes it feel like a game rather than a chat is structure: rolls when things are uncertain, a hero with strengths and weaknesses, and items that matter.

Your first turn

• Pick an adventure that sounds fun tonight: a short dungeon crawl is a great first game
• Choose a hero whose strengths fit how you like to play
• Read the opening, then say what you do in plain words
• Be specific: "I pick the lock with the nail I found" beats "I escape"

The d20 and the five attributes

When an action could fail, the Dungeon Master names a check and a difficulty. You roll a d20 and add a bonus from the matching attribute: Physical for strength and endurance, Mental for perception and logic, Social for persuasion, Spirit for magic and willpower, Luck for fortune.

A natural 20 is a critical success, a natural 1 a critical fail, and a near miss can still be a partial success with a cost.

Items, gold and the Merchant

The story drops loot as you play. You choose what to pick up, as long as you can carry it. Items can be used in the story, and the right one can improve a roll. Gold buys new gear from the Merchant, and anything in your stash follows your hero to the next adventure.

Tips for a great session

• Talk to people: the narrator plays every character, and they remember you
• Use your gear and your backstory
• Check the journal if you lose the thread
• Try a richer AI model for big story moments
