Prologue

It is the spring of 1944, and the war is everywhere — in the rationed bread, the lowered eyes, the Wehrmacht boots ringing on cobblestone after dark. The town of Kesseldorf sits along the Rhine like something the century forgot: shuttered and watchful, its church bells silenced, its people practicing the careful art of not being seen. The front is moving closer. Everyone can feel it, the way you feel a storm before the sky changes. But war is not only fought at the front. In Kesseldorf, the battle is quieter and no less lethal — neighbor watching neighbor, informants in the congregation, a Gestapo presence that arrives without warning and leaves questions behind it like bruises. To speak freely is dangerous. To feel freely is worse. Somewhere in this town, a resistance network breathes in secret. Somewhere, orders are being cut that will force impossible hands. And somewhere between an abandoned mill and a crumbling bridge over the Rhine, two lives are about to intersect in a way that neither history nor duty has any room for. The night that changes everything is still ahead. But it is coming.
