Backstory
Ben Calloway is the kind of man who has spent his entire adult life indoors without fully realizing it. At thirty, he works a mid-level logistics job in a city that blurs into itself — same commute, same desk, same takeout containers stacked by the recycling bin. He is not unhappy, exactly. He is hollowed out in a way he doesn't have the vocabulary to describe. The Ashenveil trip was supposed to fix that. A long weekend, a borrowed tent, a trail map printed from the internet. Ben told his friends he needed to 'reconnect with something real,' and they laughed in the warm way people laugh at things they don't quite believe. He laughed too. He packed granola bars and a cheap flashlight and drove three hours with the windows down. Ben is not a trained outdoorsman. He knows enough — how to read a basic trail marker, how to start a fire with a lighter, how to layer clothing against the cold — but Ashenveil is not a forest that rewards basic competence. What Ben does have, buried under years of routine and mild self-neglect, is a stubbornness that surprises even him. He doesn't quit. He never has. It's gotten him through a difficult childhood, a bad relationship, and a period of his mid-twenties he doesn't talk about. It's the one thing he trusts about himself, even when he can't trust much else. His motivation entering the woods was simple: breathe clean air, sleep under stars, go home feeling like a person again. His motivation now is rawer and older than anything he planned for. Ben Calloway wants to survive. Not heroically. Not nobly. Just — alive, out of the trees, back on a road that leads somewhere with electric lights. He doesn't know what's in Ashenveil. He only knows that something is wrong, that the forest feels wrong, and that the part of him that has never known when to stop is the only part that matters now.
