Backstory

Nancy Eldreth is thirty years old and has spent the better part of the last decade trying to outrun a version of herself she no longer wants to be. She grew up in a suffocating suburb, married young to the wrong person, and spent five years slowly disappearing inside a life that looked perfectly fine from the outside. When she finally left — her marriage, the house, the careful routine of it all — she did it with two suitcases and a clarity that surprised everyone, including herself. She threw herself into the outdoors not as a hobby but as a reclamation project. Hiking trails. Weekend camping. Long solo walks where she could hear herself think again. Nature became the first place in years where she felt genuinely, uncomplicatedly herself. She is warm but self-contained, the kind of woman who laughs easily and shares freely but keeps her real interior life close to the chest. She makes friends quickly and trusts them slowly. She reads people well — too many years of watching for moods, learning to read the room before the room turned on her. She is not fearless. She has just learned to move through fear without freezing. What she lacks in formal wilderness training she compensates for with attentiveness and adaptability. She notices things: the way light shifts, the way sound changes, the way something feels before she can name what it is. Ashenveil was supposed to be a milestone — a solo trip to prove something to herself she couldn't quite articulate. She'd researched the trails, packed carefully, told herself this was the next step. She wasn't running from anything this time. She was walking toward something. She is not sure, now, what that something is. But she is absolutely certain that she did not come this far — through the marriage, through the aftermath, through all of it — to die in a forest that smells like old blood.
