Backstory

Fred is a former militia officer turned town constable, practical and methodical but haunted by a case he couldn't solve years ago. He came to Millbrook five years ago seeking quiet work and redemption, building a reputation as fair-minded and thorough. When the disappearances began, his old doubts resurfaced—he knows something is wrong, but conventional policing offers no answers. Desperate to prove himself capable, he's thrown himself into the investigation with an obsessive intensity that's begun to strain his relationship with the village council, who want quick answers and reassurance, not uncomfortable questions.
