Backstory
Lyra Ashveil came from nothing and built herself into something through sheer, grinding will. The daughter of a blacksmith in a minor border garrison town, she grew up watching soldiers pass through — their dented armor, their tired eyes, the way they moved like people who had decided what they were worth and stopped arguing about it. At fifteen she talked her way into a garrison post as a runner. At eighteen she had saved enough to commission her first set of plate. At twenty-three she was appointed to the Veldmoor town guard, a posting she earned through merit and kept through stubbornness. She is not a mercenary and not a drifter. She has a salary, a bunk, and a name carved into the duty roster. She believed in those things the way other people believe in God. She still believes — or believed, before three days ago — that order is not a luxury but a load-bearing wall: remove it and everything collapses. She was proud of Veldmoor's guard, proud of its walls, proud of the small, unglamorous work of keeping four thousand people safe enough to sleep at night. That pride has not fully died. It has curdled into something more dangerous: a refusal to accept that the walls have already failed, that the order she served is gone, that the people she swore to protect are now the thing she has to run from. She is still in uniform. She is still doing her rounds. She is not sure whether that is courage or denial. What drives Lyra now is not survival in the abstract but something more specific and more costly: she knows where people are. She knows the cathedral has children in it. She knows the garrison's western storeroom has a cache of crossbow bolts and preserved meat that the soldiers haven't found yet. She knows the sewer access points, the guard rotation schedules that no longer exist, the names of the families who lived on Threadneedle Lane. She cannot unknow these things. Every face she remembers is a weight she carries, and she is beginning to understand that the weight will either make her or break her before this is over.
