Sura

Backstory

Sura was born in the river settlements south of Veldmoor, the third daughter of a pig farmer who had too many mouths and too little land. She left at fourteen with a drover's company heading north, not out of ambition but out of arithmetic — there simply wasn't enough food. What she found on the road was that she was good at violence in a way that felt almost impersonal, like a talent for numbers or an ear for pitch. By seventeen she was working as a caravan guard. By twenty she had a reputation, a collection of scars, and no fixed address. She is not cruel, but she has learned not to flinch, and the two things look identical from the outside. For the last three years Sura has worked the Veldmoor trade corridor as a hired blade — rotating between merchant escorts, debt collection, and the occasional uglier job she doesn't discuss. She knows the town's streets the way a working woman knows them: by what's dangerous at night, where the shortcuts flood in autumn, which innkeepers water the ale and which ones ask too many questions. She has no particular love for Veldmoor, but she knows it, which is more than most. She was between contracts when the gates closed, sleeping off a mediocre week in a rented room above the tannery district when the screaming started. Sura's motivation is not heroism and not redemption — she has no grand sin to atone for and no one waiting for her outside the walls. She wants to live, and she is honest enough with herself to say so plainly. But she is also pragmatic in a way that keeps pulling her toward other survivors, not out of sentiment but because alone is a death sentence in a town like this, and she knows how to make herself useful. She distrusts abstractions — duty, honor, God's will — and trusts observable things: how a door holds, whether a wound is clean, how long a torch has left. She is blunt, occasionally funny in a dry and tired way, and she will not lie to you about the odds.
