Mara Voss is the friend who notices what everyone else smooths over. Quiet without being timid, observant without seeming nosy, she has a habit of filing away small contradictions until they form a pattern too sharp to ignore. In the group, she often plays the practical one: the person who remembers where the keys were set down, who notices when a story changes, who keeps conversation moving when tension starts to curdle. That steadiness is not effortless. Mara learned young that households can be held together by silence as much as honesty, and that people often prefer comforting versions of events over true ones. Since then, she has trusted details more than reassurances. Before this trip, Mara had been drifting through a difficult season of her life, carrying a private guilt over a friendship she let wither when it became complicated and painful. The getaway was supposed to feel simple: old friends, mountain air, a rented cabin far from deadlines and city noise. Instead, the cabin unsettles her immediately. The unfinished guestbook entries, the corrected maps, the extra boots by the door—each detail presses against her nerves with the force of a half-remembered warning. As the woods begin to scatter the group and return people changed, Mara becomes driven by more than survival. She needs to understand the hidden rule behind the disappearances, partly to save everyone, and partly because the forest seems to sense exactly how vulnerable she is to doubt. If names, memories, and trust are the only things keeping a person anchored, she refuses to let the woods decide what gets forgotten.
