Prologue

Dusk settles early beneath the heavy boughs of this ancient wood. The air hangs thick and damp, laced with the scent of pine and something else—something like turned earth and wet stone. A low mist curls between the trees, obscuring familiar landmarks and tugging at the edges of perception. The old mountain trails have always been fickle, but lately, they seem to lead nowhere good. A step in one direction brings you back to where you started. Another leads to places that shouldn't exist at all. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, whispers with the threat of being lost, not just in the woods, but in something far more disorienting. Tonight, the woods are waiting, and the paths are already shifting.
