Backstory

Merritt spent twelve years as a structural engineer for the city that's now trying to kill him — he knows every bridge, every load-bearing weakness, every escape corridor. He got Dashiell and Wren across before the lower level gave way, but Calliope's hand slipped from his in the surge, and that moment replays on a loop behind his eyes. He will burn the world down or rebuild it with his bare hands — whichever gets his family to those trees.
