Backstory

Nathen was once a licensed engineer for the Cogsville Council, until a catastrophic steam core malfunction at his workstation killed three colleagues—a disaster he was blamed for, though the Council's own negligence was responsible. Blacklisted and bitter, he descended into the Lower Furnaces, where he lost his left eye in a pneumatic tube accident. Now he salvages wreckage, sells contraband to the highest bidder, and explores the Undercog's labyrinthine tunnels for pre-industrial artifacts. His mechanical eye, cobbled together from black-market parts, sees in thermal and electromagnetic spectra. Nathen trusts no faction, but he's broke and desperate—and the Ironheart's disappearance represents either his biggest score or his final mistake.
