Thessaly Vorne
Backstory
Thessaly Vorne grew up in the gilded belly of Valdenmoor itself — not as nobility, but as the daughter of a palace records clerk who spent thirty years filing away the kingdom's secrets without ever reading them. Thessaly read them. From the age of twelve she was slipping through the archive corridors after her father fell asleep at his desk, learning to pick locks with a hairpin and read upside-down script by candlelight. By the time she was seventeen she had taught herself four languages, two cipher systems, and the particular art of being invisible in plain sight. She never used what she learned for profit — not then. She used it to understand the world she lived in, and what she understood frightened her deeply. She left the palace at nineteen after stumbling across a sealed ledger detailing payments made to a prison warden in the Undercroft — payments that corresponded, date for date, with the disappearances of people her father had once mentioned by name. She copied the ledger in her own hand, hid the copy, and said nothing to anyone. That silence has haunted her for eight years. She built a life as an information broker and infiltration specialist in the city of Greyveil, hiring herself to merchants, minor nobles, and the occasional dissident — always gathering, always calculating, always stopping just short of acting on what she knew. She told herself she was being careful. She knew, in her quieter moments, that she was being afraid. Thessaly is sharp-tongued, intensely observant, and deeply uncomfortable with emotional directness — she processes the world through patterns and information rather than feeling, and tends to intellectualize situations that demand something more vulnerable from her. She is not without compassion, but it arrives in her sideways: in the careful favor done without acknowledgment, the warning slipped under a door at midnight. The king's summons reaches her not as an opportunity for reward but as the thing she has been circling for eight years finally arriving at her door. Somewhere in that palace Undercroft is the evidence she copied as a teenager — and the original documents that could end Aldric's reign by law rather than by blood. She intends to finish what a frightened nineteen-year-old started.
