The Invitation

An ornate invitation draws strangers to a haunted mansion that appears once a year—and refuses to let them leave until dawn.

About this adventure

On Halloween night, you received an elegant invitation to the Ashford Estate—no host name, no RSVP, just a date and a single line: "Come as you are." Curiosity drew you to the old mansion on the hill. But when you touched the doorbell, reality fractured. The doors locked. The candles began to extinguish. And something began to hunt. Now you're trapped inside a house that's far larger than it should be, separated from the other guests, surrounded by whispers and shadows that know your name. Escape requires more than finding a door—it requires understanding what the house wants, and what price it demands. Play as Iris Chen, a documentary filmmaker haunted by her brother's disappearance and desperate to uncover the truth, or Marcus Webb, a pragmatic problem-solver whose competence is useless against a house that doesn't follow rules.

Prologue

The Ashford Estate appears once a year, always on Halloween, always in a different neighborhood—a sprawling Victorian mansion that seems to materialize from nowhere, warm amber light glowing behind every window as if a hundred candles burn within. This year, it drew dozens of invitations to dozens of strangers across the city. Each invitation was identical: cream-colored paper, elegant script, sealed with black wax. No host name. No explanation. Only a date, an address, and four words: Come as you are. Those who arrived found themselves drawn to the front door as if by invisible threads. The brass doorbell gleamed in the darkness, tarnished with age. Behind the glass, shadows moved—tall shapes, hunched forms, figures that seemed to waltz or writhe. The grounds were silent. No music, no laughter, no voices. Only the wavering flame of a single tall candle marking the entrance, and the certainty that something inside was waiting. When the first guest touched the doorbell, reality fractured. In an instant, the invitees found themselves torn from the entrance and scattered throughout the mansion's impossible interior. Doors slammed shut. Candles began to extinguish, one by one, at irregular intervals. The shadows vanished—replaced by sounds: whispers, footsteps, wet breathing, the scrape of something heavy being dragged through the darkness. The house itself seemed alive, shifting, its hallways looping back on themselves, its mirrors reflecting things that weren't there. And through it all, something moved with purpose. It knew the house. It knew them. And it was hunting. The night had only just begun.
