The Protector's Dilemma

Prologue

The world exists in layers, and few mortals glimpse the spaces between. Fae dwell in the old forests and hidden gardens, aging slowly, remembering deeply, existing partially outside the flow of human time. Yet in recent years, the boundary between their realm and the mortal one has grown unstable. Treaties fray. Prophecies stir. And certain individuals—born of mixed blood, carrying untamed magic, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time—become objects of interest to powers both seen and unseen. One such person has been sequestered in a safe house, removed from the world, assigned a guardian whose loyalty is beyond question. The reasons given are clear enough: protection from those who would exploit their gifts, containment of a power too volatile for open society. Yet as weeks pass in intimate isolation, a question begins to whisper beneath the surface of duty: what if the real threat comes not from without, but from within the assignment itself? The protector and the protected grow closer. Affection blooms in stolen moments. But duty demands distance, and love demands honesty—and neither can exist while secrets remain hidden. Something is about to break. The only question is whether it will be the chains of duty, the walls of deception, or the hearts of those caught between them.
