Backstory

Anton was never meant to be one thing. Born to a wandering family of traveling performers and petty hedge-mages, he grew up learning a little of everything — sleight of hand from his mother, swordsmanship from a retired mercenary who wintered with the troupe for three years, and scraps of real arcane theory from a disgraced academy scholar who traded lessons for meals. He was never the best at any of it. But he was relentlessly, stubbornly good at all of it, and over time that combination became something the world had no clean name for. He has worked as a bodyguard, a courier, an exorcist, a duelist-for-hire, and once — briefly, accidentally — a folk hero in a village that misunderstood what he had done to their haunted mill. He does not linger anywhere long enough to be fully known, which suits him. Being fully known, he has found, tends to lead to expectations. Anton is pragmatic to the bone, with a dry humor that surfaces most often when things are going badly. He is not reckless, but he is genuinely, almost constitutionally unafraid — not because he lacks imagination, but because he has survived enough strange situations that his baseline for 'alarming' has shifted considerably upward. He trusts his own adaptability more than he trusts any plan, and he has a habit of making decisions mid-motion, adjusting as he goes, which unnerves careful people and impresses everyone else. He is not particularly interested in glory or legacy. What drives him is simpler and harder to explain: he wants to see what is at the top. Not for power, not for answers to any burning personal question. He just needs to know. The not-knowing, once it takes hold of him, becomes a splinter he cannot leave alone. He came to the moorland following a fragment of a letter — not addressed to him, found in a dead man's coat in a roadside inn, describing the Spire in terms so precise and so strange that Anton read it four times before he folded it and put it in his own pocket. He has no grand motivation, no tragic wound the Spire might heal, no prophecy pointing him here. He simply read the letter, looked out the inn window at the direction of the moor, and finished his drink. That was three days ago. He has been walking ever since.
