Backstory
No one knows how long Skeleton has haunted the moorlands surrounding the Spire. They predate the memory of any living person in the region — a rattling, purposeful figure seen drifting through the fog on moonless nights, picking clean the bones of fallen travelers and adding choice fragments to their own frame. They are not undead in the traditional sense: no necromancer raised them, no curse anchors them to unfinished business. They simply are, and have always been, as far as anyone who has ever glimpsed them can tell. Their personality is dry, unhurried, and faintly amused by the urgency of living creatures. They do not eat, do not sleep, do not tire — and this has given them a peculiar philosophical patience that reads, to most people, as either profound wisdom or profound indifference. The distinction, Skeleton would note, is not as meaningful as the living tend to assume. Skeleton has entered the Spire before. Several times, in fact, across what they vaguely recall as a very long stretch of years. Each time, the tower sealed behind them, the floors rearranged themselves, and Skeleton climbed until something on the upper floors finally managed to unmake them — scattering their bones across some sealed chamber where they lay, inert and patient, until enough time passed and enough of their will reassembled to pull themselves back together and drift out into the moor again. They bear no grudge about this. The Spire is interesting. That is reason enough. Among the bone fragments that make up their body are pieces that do not belong to any single skeleton — a femur of unusual density, finger bones that hum faintly in the presence of magic, a jawbone that once belonged to something that was definitely not human. Each piece was chosen. Each piece was earned. What draws Skeleton back this time is something new: a sound. Not the Spire's familiar low hum, which they know the way one knows an old neighbor's footstep — but something beneath it. A second frequency, lower and irregular, like a second heartbeat out of rhythm with the first. Skeleton has no heart, but they understand rhythm, and this one is wrong. Whatever is happening inside the Spire has changed since their last climb, and Skeleton finds, to their own mild surprise, that they want to know what it is. Not for treasure, not for power, not for the answers that desperate living climbers seek. Simply because the Spire has never surprised them before, and novelty, at their age, is worth any number of unmaking.
