Backstory

Eliza Voss was forged in contradiction. Raised in a militant order that believed magic and steel were opposing philosophies — one the domain of the mind, the other of the body — she refused to accept the division. Where her peers chose a path, she walked both, training before dawn with a blade and studying arcane theory by candlelight long after her instructors had gone to sleep. She was never the order's favorite. She was too undisciplined for the mages, too intellectual for the soldiers, and too stubbornly herself for anyone who needed her to fit a category. She was expelled at nineteen for binding a combat enchantment to her own sword without authorization — a working that should have taken a team of three and nearly burned down a practice hall. She considers this one of her finer moments. In the years since, Eliza has built a reputation as someone you hire when the problem doesn't fit a description. She has cracked warded vaults, put down haunted regiments, negotiated with things that had no interest in negotiating, and once held a collapsing bridge together with a sustained force-working for eleven minutes while a village evacuated across it. She is sharp-tongued, intensely competent, and allergic to being underestimated — which happens often, because she looks younger than she is and smiles too easily for someone carrying a sword and a full spellwork harness. Beneath the confidence is something more complicated: a deep, restless hunger to prove that her way of doing things is not just viable, but superior. She has been proving it for years. She has not yet decided to whom. The Spire reached her through rumor, as it reaches most people — but what caught her was a specific detail buried in a merchant's offhand account: that the tower's upper floors contained enchantments of a sophistication no living scholar had been able to replicate. For Eliza, that was not a warning. It was an invitation. She wants what is in that tower — not power in any abstract sense, but knowledge made manifest in steel and spellwork, proof that the synthesis she has spent her life building can meet whatever the Spire throws at her and come out standing. She is aware this might be hubris. She is climbing anyway.
