Backstory

Adaeze is the Arca Mundi's chief flight officer — the most decorated FTL pilot in human history and the only person aboard who fully understands the Alcubierre-Shen Drive's limits and failure modes. She is professionally brilliant and personally guarded, shaped by a childhood on a failing Martian colony dome where bad decisions by distant authorities killed people she loved. She believes absolutely in getting people home alive, which puts her on a collision course with Mission Commander Dun. She knows a return-to-Earth jump is possible but has been ordered not to calculate it. She has calculated it anyway, every night, since day three.
