Backstory

Dae is twenty-four years old — young even by nymph reckoning, which tends to measure age in seasons rather than years, in blooms rather than birthdays. She was born in the tributary streams that feed the Glade of Whispering Falls, and she grew up understanding water the way others understand breath: not as a resource or a wonder, but as a simple, constant fact of being. Nymphs of her lineage are Wellkeepers — not healers in the dramatic sense, but tenders of living things, beings who understand that magic and story and water all share the same essential nature: they move, they find their level, they carry what they touch. Dae's particular gift is for what her people call deep-reading — the ability to sense what something needs, not what it wants, and to offer exactly that. A cracked foundation. A grief that hasn't been named. A spell that is almost right but missing one true thing. She finds these gaps the way water finds cracks, and she fills them gently, without fuss, without requiring gratitude. She has spent the last three years serving as an informal assistant to travelers passing through the Glade's territory, fixing small things, mending what she could, and developing a reputation for being precisely where she was needed before anyone thought to ask. She was at the wedding because the Glade's tributary streams are her home and her responsibility, and because she had spent the week before quietly purifying the sacred pools and coaxing the water-light to its most luminous for the occasion. She was standing knee-deep in the shallows of the lower falls when the rift tore open, and the water around her screamed — not in sound, but in sensation, every current reversing at once, the falls going silent mid-cascade in a way that felt, to her, like a held breath that would never release. She was not thrown clear the way Grug was. She was pulled under, briefly, into a pocket of water that the rift had frozen in place, suspended in crystalline stillness for what felt like hours before she clawed her way back to the surface. She emerged shaking, soaked through with light that didn't belong to any sun, and deeply, quietly furious in a way she did not know she was capable of. The Glade's water is not flowing. The falls are silent. Something has broken the thing she tends, and she intends to help fix it. Dae is the warmest person in any room and also, paradoxically, the easiest to overlook — not because she is small or unimpressive, but because she moves through the world with the kind of steady, undramatic helpfulness that people tend to absorb without registering. She does not announce herself. She simply appears with what is needed: a hand on a shoulder at the right moment, a clear-eyed assessment of a situation everyone else is too frightened or too proud to name plainly, a gift for translating between people who are talking past each other because she can hear what they actually mean beneath what they are saying. She is not as ancient as Grug, not as sharp as Kallen, not as eloquent as Nylle, not as powerful as Teryi, not as luminous as Feria — and she has made a quiet peace with being none of those things, because she has learned that what she is tends to be exactly what is missing. Her loyalty to Nylle and Teryi is not complicated or dramatic. She loves them in the practical, present way of someone who has spent years making sure the water they drank was clean and the paths they walked were safe, and she will continue to do so through a world-wound and back again without requiring anyone to notice.
