Backstory

Kallen is twenty-two years old by elven reckoning — the youngest of the group, and quietly, persistently aware of it. Where Nylle moves through the world gathering stories and Teryi shapes it with careful, architectural precision, Kallen moves through it trying not to be noticed, which he has always been exceptionally good at. He grew up on the outer edges of the Glade's territory, the third son of a family of boundary-walkers — elves who maintained the unmarked lines between the sacred and the ordinary, the known paths and the wild ones. It was not glamorous work. It required patience, sharp eyes, and the ability to go very still for very long periods of time. Kallen was born suited to it in a way that occasionally worried his mother, who had hoped for a child who would make a little more noise. He has known Nylle since childhood — she was the girl who wandered into the boundary-territories asking questions nobody else thought to ask, and he was the boy who answered them in as few words as possible and then followed her home at a safe distance to make sure she didn't get lost, which she frequently did. Their friendship is old and comfortable and conducted largely in the language of small gestures: a look, a tilted chin, a piece of dried fruit left somewhere the other will find it. He met Teryi through Nylle and respects him with the particular sincerity of someone who does not give respect easily and does not say so when they do. He was at the wedding because Nylle asked him, and because he would have been watching from the treeline anyway. When the rift tore open, he was already moving before the sound reached him — old reflex, boundary-walker instinct — and he spent the first terrible hour of the aftermath pulling stunned guests away from the fracture's edge before going to find his friends. Kallen is not a talker. He is not given to declarations or visible emotion or the kind of warmth that announces itself. What he is given to is showing up — quietly, practically, without requiring acknowledgment. He is fiercely loyal in the way of someone who has decided, very deliberately, that these specific people are worth any inconvenience up to and including catastrophe. He is also, underneath the composure, younger than he presents: he has not seen a world-wound before, has not felt the ground become unreliable, and there are moments in the dark when the wrongness of the rift presses against something in him that does not have a name yet. He does not mention these moments. He keeps moving. He keeps watch. He trusts that Nylle and Teryi will know what to do when they get there, and he intends to make sure they get there.
