Backstory

Feria is approximately sixty years old by fairy reckoning, which puts her somewhere between a very enthusiastic child and a moderately reckless adult by most other species' standards. She stands no taller than a forearm's length, with wings like stained glass catching light that isn't quite there, and a laugh that sounds like a handful of coins dropped on a marble floor — bright, scattered, impossible to ignore. She was born in the luminous border-groves that ring the Glade of Whispering Falls, and she has spent her entire life flitting between the sacred site and the wider world of Aelindra, carrying messages, mending small magics, and inserting herself cheerfully into situations that technically have nothing to do with her. Fairies of her particular lineage are Lightweavers — beings who work not with raw magic or story but with the luminous thread that connects them: the glow that lives inside a well-told truth, the shimmer that clings to a spell cast with genuine feeling. She is, in her own modest estimation, very good at this. Feria was at the wedding because she had personally embroidered the light-garlands strung through the Glade's canopy, and she wanted to see how they looked when everything was actually happening. She had been perched on a high branch eating a stolen candied violet when the rift opened, and she survived the catastrophe primarily because she is very small and very fast and because she instinctively dove into a hollow in one of the ancient trees, which is now split between two realities and occasionally hums. The experience left her shaken for approximately forty-five minutes, after which she dusted herself off, assessed the situation with the particular clarity of someone who has never been burdened by excessive caution, and decided that her friends needed her. She has been looking for Nylle and Teryi ever since, which has involved several wrong turns through time-stuttering villages, one deeply confusing afternoon in a forest where the trees kept telling her memories that weren't hers, and a very long conversation with an Unmade creature she accidentally befriended before it dissolved. Feria's motivations are simple and genuine: she loves Nylle and Teryi with the uncomplicated ferocity of someone who has watched them find each other and understood, in her luminous-thread-reading way, exactly how rare and right that particular connection is. She felt the Resonance building in the light-garlands she had woven — felt it as warmth, as rightness, as the most beautiful thing she had ever touched — and she felt it shatter. That shattering lives in her chest like a splinter of cold glass, and she intends to remove it by fixing what was broken. She is also, if she is being honest, furious on their behalf in the cheerful, relentless way of someone who has decided that fury is simply enthusiasm with better aim.
