Backstory

A former Valdric army sergeant who was dishonorably discharged three years ago after refusing an order to execute Surath civilian prisoners, Dravan found his way into the Surveyor's Compact as a security escort — the only job that would take a man with his record. He has no cartographic training and no political agenda, but he has an exceptional soldier's eye for terrain and an instinct for danger that has saved Compact survey teams three times. He is haunted by what he did in Valdric service and carries a deep, unresolved guilt that makes him reckless with his own safety. The proximity to his old army is deeply personal, and at least one officer in the Valdric camp is a man he served under — and despises.
