Backstory

Orin was a soldier in the Compact's colonial forces — not a true believer, but a man from a poor family who needed the pay. He served two years in the Ember Reaches and what he witnessed turned his stomach and eventually his coat. He deserted after refusing an order to burn a Dragonborn village that had already surrendered. He has been living in Port Cinderfall's underworld for six months, surviving on odd jobs and avoiding Compact patrols who would hang him. He knows the Compact's military structure, its patrol routes, its officers, and its weaknesses in intimate detail. He is motivated by guilt, and guilt is a powerful engine.
