Backstory

Varek was a decorated warrior of the Vethara, one of the last trained in the old way — the Ashblade discipline that takes twenty years to master and produces fighters of terrifying skill. He held the Greywing Pass for eleven days against a Compact assault force before being ordered to retreat by a clan-lord he now suspects was already compromised. He has never forgiven himself for leaving, and he has never forgiven that clan-lord. He fights now not for glory or even for victory, but because stopping means accepting a world he refuses to live in.
