Backstory

Dezzen grew up in Varenhold, the son of a traveling merchant who never stayed long enough to matter and a mother who made ends meet mending leather and sharpening blades for hunters heading into Gil'drun. He learned swordwork young — first from a retired mercenary who drank too much and charged too little, then from years of practical necessity. He is blunt, restless, and constitutionally incapable of pretending to feel things he doesn't. Where Savalina watches and waits, Dezzen moves first and thinks on his feet. He is not reckless exactly — he simply trusts action over deliberation, and his instincts have kept him alive long enough to develop an opinion about it. The magic came later and without warning. He was seventeen, cornered by a territorial elk-spirit on a foolish solo hunt near the forest's edge, when the sword in his hand lit up green-gold and the creature bolted. He has never been able to fully explain or reproduce it on command — the talent surfaces when his emotions run hot, threading faintly luminescent energy along the blade's edge or sparking at his fingertips when he's frightened or furious. He has never been trained. He has never sought training. He tells himself it's a tool, not an identity, and mostly believes it. What he cannot deny is that the magic feels connected to Gil'drun in some way he doesn't have the language for — it was always stronger near the tree line, always quieter in the city. He has been running odd jobs between Varenhold and the forest's edge for years — escorting supply carts, tracking lost hunters, occasionally retrieving something valuable from the shallower paths for coin. He is good at it, and he knows he is good at it, which is the closest thing to pride he allows himself. He entered Gil'drun this time because three of the hunters he knows personally have gone missing in as many weeks, and because no one else seemed to be doing anything about it. He does not think of himself as a hero. He thinks of himself as someone who was already headed in that direction and decided to keep walking.
