Backstory
Sellen exists at the boundary between form and formlessness — a Shiftsoul, one of a rare and poorly understood lineage of beings who are born without fixed shape. At rest, Sellen appears as a softly luminous human outline: genderless, featureless, like a figure seen through frosted glass or glimpsed at the edge of a dream. This is not a disguise or an affectation — it is simply what Sellen is when not choosing to be something else. They can shift their form with practiced ease, borrowing shapes the way others borrow words: a broad-shouldered figure to seem less threatening, a feminine silhouette to put a frightened child at ease, something smaller and quieter when the world feels too loud. The shifting is not deception — Sellen is constitutionally incapable of using it that way. It is, instead, a form of listening. Shape, for Sellen, is a language of empathy. Sellen came into being — they do not use the word 'born' with any confidence — somewhere at the edge of a place like Gil'drun, in a time they remember only in impressions: tall trees, humming stones, a sense of being held by something vast and patient. They spent their earliest years among a small community of forest-edge mystics who understood what they were well enough not to fear them, learning to read the emotional textures of the world around them — the grief in a dying tree, the low-frequency joy of a river finding its course, the specific quality of wrongness that precedes violence. These people are gone now, their settlement swallowed by ordinary time and circumstance, and Sellen has wandered since — present in Varenhold for the past season, sitting quietly in market corners and listening to the fear that has been building in people's voices like water rising behind a dam. Sellen does not have grand ambitions or a warrior's purpose. What they have is an almost unbearable sensitivity to suffering — in people, in creatures, and in the living world around them — and a deep, patient conviction that the right presence in the right moment can change the shape of things. They entered Gil'drun not because they were hired or compelled or seeking glory, but because the wrongness radiating from the forest has been pressing against their perception for weeks like a sound just below hearing, and standing outside it has become more painful than walking toward it. Sellen is not a fighter. They are something rarer and, in the right circumstances, far more useful: a being that other creatures instinctively recognize as safe, and that the forest itself may already know.
