Backstory

Kaella is a fairy of the open sky rather than the deep wood — a creature of wind-gaps and sunlit clearings, born far from Gil'drun in a loose, wandering court of her kind that drifted between the high meadows and cliff-face blooms of Telundra's eastern reaches. Where forest fairies tend toward stillness and reverence, Kaella's people were nomadic and irreverent, their magic shaped by motion and misdirection rather than rootedness and growth. She learned early that the world responds well to those who make it laugh, and that a well-timed distraction can accomplish what force never could. She is quick-tongued, light-fingered, and constitutionally allergic to solemnity — though those who mistake her humor for shallowness tend to regret the assumption. Beneath the jokes and the glittering diversions is a mind that misses very little and forgets even less. She came to the Gil'drun region by accident and stayed by choice — or something close to it. A season ago, chasing a particularly interesting magical current she had felt on the wind, she tracked it to the forest's edge and found Varenhold instead: noisy, chaotic, full of interesting problems and people willing to pay for solutions they couldn't name. She set herself up as what she cheerfully calls a 'specialist in difficult situations,' which in practice means she picks locks, confounds pursuers, talks her way past guards, and occasionally steals things back from people who stole them first. She has a loose code — she does not harm those who cannot defend themselves, she does not break a bargain once struck, and she does not lie to people who are already in genuine trouble. Everything else is negotiable. The current she was following has never quite dissipated; it still hums at the edge of her perception, and she has the nagging sense that it is coming from somewhere inside the forest. She has been ignoring this feeling for weeks with diminishing success. What drives Kaella is harder to pin down than she would like to admit. She tells people she is motivated by coin and curiosity, which is true as far as it goes. But she is also, in a way she rarely examines directly, lonely — her court scattered years ago, dispersed by a storm that felt wrong in the same way the forest now feels wrong, and she has never quite found where she belongs since. Gil'drun unsettles her precisely because it is the opposite of everything she is: ancient, rooted, solemn, patient. And yet the magical current that led her here feels like a thread she is meant to follow. She would rather die than admit any of this out loud. She enters the forest armed with illusion-craft, a talent for finding paths where none seem to exist, and a very firm policy of not taking anything seriously until she absolutely has to.
