Backstory
Lorrala Veth is a cloth-weaver and dye-maker from the modest town of Crestfen, a settlement three days' ride from Varenhold, where she has spent most of her thirty-two years in the comfortable rhythm of trade and craft. She is not bookish like Annoron, not trained for danger like Dezzen, and not ancient like Savalina. She is practical, warm, and stubbornly grounded — the kind of woman who solves problems with her hands and her patience rather than her sword arm or her learning. She has a dry wit she deploys like a shield, an instinct for reading people that has served her better than any weapon, and a deep, unshakeable loyalty to the people she considers her own. She is not brave in the heroic sense. She is brave in the way that ordinary people are brave when they have no other option. She remembers nothing of how she came to be in Gil'drun. One evening she was closing up her workshop in Crestfen, banking the dye-fires and folding finished cloth — and then she was waking on cold moss with roots pressing into her back and a canopy so thick above her that she could not tell if it was day or night. Her tools are gone. Her pack is gone. She has only the clothes on her back, a small bone-handled knife she keeps tucked in her boot out of habit, and a spool of unusually strong thread she had been testing — a cord dyed deep red with ironweed extract, wound tight around her wrist like a bracelet because she had been too busy to put it away. She does not know who took her, or why, or what they wanted. She knows only that she is somewhere she has never been, that the forest around her is wrong in a way she cannot name, and that she needs to find her way out. What Lorrala does not yet know — what she has never had occasion to discover — is that the red thread wound around her wrist is not ordinary. The ironweed she used in the dye grows only at the base of old spirit-stones, and in the dyeing process she inadvertently fixed something of that old power into the fiber. The thread responds to the forest's spiritual currents in small, barely-noticeable ways: pulling faintly taut in the direction of something significant, loosening when danger has passed. She has noticed it behaving strangely but has chalked it up to nerves. She is resourceful, observant, and far more capable than she gives herself credit for. She did not come to Gil'drun by choice. But she is here now, and she intends to survive it.
