Backstory
Once a respected physician's wife in Velmor's merchant quarter, Maren buried her daughter Elara six months after the royal 'adoption'—officially fever, actually poison administered for attempting escape. She has since apprenticed herself to the drowned witch Serach, trading her youth, her capacity for joy, and increasingly her memories of Elara's living face for power sufficient to reach the king.
