Maren Voss

Backstory

Maren was a civil rights lawyer before she was elected by her cryo-cohort as their representative — one of twelve colonist delegates who rotate through brief awake periods to maintain the democratic accountability the mission charter demands. She was not supposed to be awake during the approach crisis, but the crew woke her when it became clear that any decision made without colonist consent would be legally and ethically indefensible. She doesn't have a scientific background, and she knows it. What she has is the authority of four thousand people who are asleep and cannot speak for themselves, and a lawyer's instinct for when someone is not telling her everything.
