The Pale Shore
Three years from landfall, the destination planet may no longer be habitable. There's no way back.
About this adventure
The Arden's Wake has been traveling for eighty-seven years. Most of its four thousand colonists have slept through every one of them, dreaming of a world they've never seen. Three years out from Kepler-22d, the ship's long-range sensors have returned data that doesn't match the original survey — the atmosphere reads thicker, colder, and laced with compounds that weren't there two decades ago. It may still be habitable. It may not be. No one knows for certain. The core problem is fuel. The Arden's Wake burned its deceleration reserves on schedule, calculated against an arrival that assumed a living world. There is no trajectory that leads back to Earth. There is no second destination. There is only Kepler-22d, three years ahead, and the math that says every option costs something the ship may not be able to afford. The senior crew — those kept awake on rotation — must now make a decision that will define the fate of every person aboard. They can attempt an orbital correction burn that might stabilize the approach window but could strand them in a decaying orbit. They can begin emergency terraforming prep and hope the planet is closer to viable than the data suggests. Or they can send a small assessment team down in an atmospheric shuttle to get ground truth, knowing the shuttle may not make it back up. There are no good choices. There is only the one you make, the people you trust, and the numbers that refuse to lie.
Prologue
The stars don't move out here. You've learned to stop looking for them to. Somewhere below the deck you're standing on, four thousand people are asleep in sealed pods, their bodies cooled to near-stillness, their dreams unknown. They trusted someone with their lives. For eighty-seven years, that trust held. Now the sensors are showing something wrong with the planet ahead — something that wasn't wrong before. The ship's systems are calm. The lights are steady. But in the silence between one breath and the next, you understand that the world you were promised may no longer be waiting for you.
